The Royal Quiet De Luxe is an American portable typewriter, and this is the first generation: the squarish, black crinkle model Royal made from 1939 to 1948. It was the top of Royal's portable line and the machine that made the name.

Production stopped during World War II, when the factories turned to the war effort. So every one of these was built either just before the war or just after it. That's a good bit of history to have on your desk. Though he’s pictured with a Noiseless typewriter, Hemingway was said to have preferred this model. So did a long list of reporters, novelists, and screenwriters who needed a machine that would not quit.

Ian Fleming liked the Quiet De Luxe so much that in 1952 he bought a gold-plated one.
