Smith Corona Electra 12 Typewriter History

By the time Smith Corona built the Electra 12, they had spent decades building some of America's most beloved manual typewriters: the Silent, the Sterling, the Classic 12, the Galaxie.

Around 1960, they put that experience into an electric machine.

The result was a typewriter that was durable, comfortable, and easy on the hands. It kept the solid bones and true typewriter feel of the Smith Corona manuals, and let a motor do the heavy lifting. The '12' means a 12 inch carriage, wider than the 10 inch carriage on most portables.

The Electra 12 is unrivaled for its

Light, even keystroke - the motor strikes every letter with the same force
Easy on the hands - ideal for writers with tired, injured, or arthritic fingers
American engineering - made in New York by Smith Corona
Wide 12 inch carriage - landscape pages, ledgers, and envelopes with room to spare
True typewriter feel - it sounds and moves like a typewriter (unlike the Selectric and other later electrics, which feel more 'computery' in my opinion)
Workhorse reliability - built for daily office and home use
A bridge to the manual world - the perfect first typewriter for those not ready for a manual's strength and dexterity
Classic features, like tab set and clear keys, adjustable margins, and [powered / manual] carriage return
A clear-ringing classic bell
