The Royal Arrow is an American portable typewriter made by Royal in the 1940s. Think of it as the Quiet De Luxe's no-nonsense sibling. It has the same bones and the same Royal action, minus a few luxuries, and it was made for people who just wanted to write.
In 1949, Sears sold the Arrow for $84.48, about ten dollars less than the Quiet De Luxe. Those ten dollars bought you a tabulator. Many writers decided they could live without one.
Richard Wright, the author of Native Son and Black Boy, was photographed with his Royal Arrow. This is a working writer's machine that can handle manuscripts.
The classic distinctions: Black crinkle paint, glass-top keys ringed in nickle, and that little Arrow badge on the paper table. The raised Royal insignia on the front. Royal’s attention to detail was astounding.
The Arrow is a portable, but a sturdy one. A high point in the golden age of typewriters. It's heavy enough to stay put on the desk and light enough to carry to the porch.
