The Olivetti Studio 44 is an Italian typewriter introduced in 1952 and designed by Marcello Nizzoli, the same man behind the Lettera 22 and 32. Olivetti called it a portable. I call it a desktop that happens to have a handle.

It's bigger and heavier than your average portable, and that's the whole point. What it gives up in hikeability, it gives back in stability. It stays put. It doesn't wander across the table. You sit down, and it feels like a real machine, because it is one.

The typing action is smooth, what some owners call buttery and others call an Italian sports car. (I've heard both. I agree with both.)

Tennessee Williams wrote on one. He owned a small fleet of typewriters and loved being photographed with them, and the Studio 44 shows up in those photos. Irwin Shaw kept one too. Good company.

Nizzoli gave it those soft mid-century curves that make it look like it belongs in a Milan design museum. It also happens to be built like a tank: heavy aluminum cast shell.

The typeface will be either 10 or 12 characters per inch (similar to a 12 or 10 point font).
