1921 Hammond Folding Multiplex, Museum Quality with Original Case, Case Hardware, Extra Shuttles with Shuttle Box. Mathematical keyboard and matching shuttle.
This is a nearly perfect 1923 Hammond Folding Multiplex with some incredible features for the year. All pieces are intact and nearly perfect. The chrome and bare metal pieces are excellent. The ribbon covers, which are normally dinged and dented, are flawless. I even have the metal spool inserts included, which are rare. The case is included with all mounting hardware. Original rollers. The slugs don’t hit the rollers, so they just have to grip paper, which they do.
Also, I’ve included 2 shuttles, the math shuttle designed for the keyboard (which does type and special math characters), and a serif type shuttle. With an original Hammond shuttle box.
Included to is an original ribbon guide and rubber protector, which is new. New feet, as well.
The shuttle even has the yellow / black sticker on top intact. And the decals are pristine, as is the black paint.
Aside from being able to adjust line spacing, and change the type (other shuttles are available used as well), you can adjust the space between letters.
All of these features don’t appear again until IBM brought them back in the1980’s. Precocious machine!
Light weight too, hence the folding mechanism. This was the most advanced Hammond ever produced, from the genius inventor and entrepreneur.
Types great, if a little cumbersome. Some features are not instantly intuitive; I’ll send a video tutorial of the machine as well.
This machine also takes the 2 tone ribbon, which is rare for these. A marvel of engineering!
Now, I wouldn’t write a novel on this, but for little notes and reflections, it is a moving experience. Or as a working antique on display.
Even the red characters on the keys under the glass are not faded, as they often are. Glorious machine!
The type is legible, but it is a little bit light. I mean, the impression is light. See samples. Kind of to be expected on such an old machine. New impression strip installed: new feet. Original rollers, great condition. These don’t touch the slugs, they are just to hold the paper.
