Remington 5 Typewriter History

The Remington Model 5 Streamliner was manufactured at Remington's historic factory in Ilion, New York—the same facility where the company had been making firearms since 1816. The streamlined body was likely designed by noted industrial designer Oscar Bruno Bach, whose work helped define the Art Deco era. While most typewriter manufacturers of the late 1930s were producing stripped-down "junior" machines to cut costs during the Depression, Remington went the opposite direction with the Model 5: a full-featured portable built to look good, type well, and last for decades.

Introduced in 1937, the Streamliner featured several innovations including a self-contained base (earlier Remington portables required the case bottom as part of the frame), the distinctive upright carriage return lever, and a "self-starter" key that advanced the carriage five spaces.

Production peaked in 1941 at around 2,500 units per month before World War II shifted Remington's factories to war production—famously, they produced more M1911 pistols than any other manufacturer.

The Streamliner was shelved by April 1942, making these pre-war gloss models especially collectible today.

Arguably one of the classics of typewriter history, the Remington Model 5’s rounded, modernist design has held up well to time, making it one of the more sought after machine for vintage writing-machine connoisseurs.

 The smooth gloss black lacquer body gets polished to a beautiful sheen, which is bound to inspire, conversation and prose alike.

Variations:

The machines all come in gloss with chrome-rimmed or rarely black-rimmed keys, and accent keys are usually red.

The margin rulers are sometimes black, sometimes red.

The Best A++ condition option will have the most pristine logos and near perfect black laquer, as well as near perfect chrome. It will also include the best available case with clean latches and hinges. 3 Year Warranty.

The excellent will show slightly more wear. Though I do aim for complete decals, They may show slight wear. 1 Year Warranty.

Comes cleaned, adjusted, oiled, and ready to write!

We replace the feet and the rollers as needed, As old rubber tends to harden. And these tend to get flat spots on the rear and front rollers. Most of these need new feed rollers; they’ll flatten and not take paper (almost any unserviced one won’t write at all for this reason)

We replace the platen with soft new rubber.
