When typewriters shed their business attire in the 1950s, there was an explosion of color which made 50s era machines famous. Sometimes, the colors were tasteless. The ACE, on the other hand, is gorgeous. The white and teal, like a sea against the sky, perchance?
While the Ace line began in the late 1930s with Underwood’s conventional styling, the 1950s versions truly captured post-war America's embrace of vibrant design.
Available in striking color combinations including blue and gold, and teal and white variants, these machines featured eye-catching shells paired with distinctive design elements. The colorful shells came housed in equally stylish plaid and black carrying cases that reflected the period's fashion-forward sensibilities.
Manufactured by the Underwood Typewriter Company at their Hartford, Connecticut facility, these machines maintained the solid construction quality that had made Underwood dominant in the typewriter industry. The 1950s Ace retained all the functional excellence of its predecessors while embracing the decade's aesthetic revolution, making it both a capable writing instrument and a statement piece that embodied the era's belief in progress, style, and individual expression.
