Glorious 1936 Underwood Standard No. 6 (11" Carriage) — All-Caps Variant

Some typewriters are tools. This one is a declaration.

The Underwood No. 6 is the direct successor to the legendary No. 5 — the machine that, more than any other, defined what a typewriter ought to look and feel like. By the time this one left Underwood's Hartford, Connecticut factory in mid-1936, the formula had been refined to its most confident form: the unmistakable open-frame silhouette, deep black enamel with crisp gold lettering, and a carriage shift with the satisfying weight of something built for daily, decades-long use. The "11" on the back panel marks the 11-inch carriage — the wider variant, suited for ledgers, headlines, and longer documents.

What makes this one genuinely uncommon is the keyboard. It's a single-case machine — capitals only, no lowercase anywhere. Alternate characters over numbers.

Underwood built these to special order for telegraph operators, Western Union desks, billing departments, and the headline writers whose work demanded uniformity above all else. Pair that with the clean sans serif typeface — itself a less common choice for the era, and a natural fit for specialty work — and every line lands with conviction. Every page, at first glance, reads like something important.

It's been lovingly brought back to life: new feet, new platen, new feed rollers, original vintage metal ribbon spools, and a three-year warranty backing every keystroke.

Original cork front rollers.

Staggeringly vintage. Life-alteringly non-digital. Ready for many nights of written rapture.
