It won't be this exact machine, and there may be slight variations. (Sometimes ‘Sterling’, sometimes ‘Standard’. Some have tabs, some do not. Some have concave keys, some have flat keys. Some are 12 characters per inch (10 point font), most are 10 characters per inch (12 point font).

Aesthetics:

This is an exceptionally clean Standard! For those the demand perfection. There was a tiny bit of surface rust which has been removed.

The chrome is scuffed but still shines. Keys are clean. Paint is in excellent condition. Gloss black shine! Sticker residue on right side. The plastic components are strong and solid, and not warped or discolored.

Structure:

Structurally, this machine is quite excellent. No dents or warping. Very robust frame. 'Bulletproof' is a good word for machines of this vintage.

Mechanics:

This typewriter has beautiful action. Very snappy with a smooth carriage return.

The innards are quite pristine. Most pieces look nearly factory fresh. These machines were designed to last a lifetime!

Coated metal insides. Carriage return is smooth and fast; spring is strong. Carriage return lever is solid. Platen knobs are well-adjusted. Type is aligned and balanced.

The bell rings crisp and clear. The line-spacing works.

Rubber:

The rubber feet are still soft; they grip the writing surface. The platen is medium-hard and a pleasure. It still grips the paper and has some bounce. The rollers are doing well.

Case:

Comes with the original case in above average condition. Slight mildewy smell. Some flecks of paint on case. Hinges weak but working.

The rubber on these models holds up well compared to other models from the same time period. Rarely need new feet or rollers or platens.

What takes that long?

We sell machines by model, so it takes take a machine out of inventory that matches your specs, and inspect, clean, and service it.

Can I just find a used machine somewhere instead?

Of course! We encourage you to explore the world. However, it won't quite work right. this is the nature of a machine sitting for decades.

If you need to get to writing, and spare yourself many nights of research and tinkering, we have the solution.

What about 'refurbished' machines on other vintage sites?

Usually, they are just cleaned up slightly and shipped out. They don't usually work 100% (more like 80%). This is because most people have never used a writing machine, so they don't know how it is supposed to work! They see an opportunity to buy a vintage machine and 'flip it', however... you get what you pay for, as the old adage goes!
