IBM Selectric 1 Guide

IBM Selectric Video Tutorial

An Overview.

These legends are one of the high points of typewriter technology; by introducing the mechanical type ball, which rotates to strike the proper character, allowing for changing typefaces. This in and of itself is a massive leap. Not to mention that these were renowned for their durability.

The Selectric I, introduced in 1961, is the iconic rounded version of the Selectric line. Its body is gently curved and was designed by Eliot Noyes, drawing inspiration from Italian Olivetti typewriters. These are one of the quintessential typewriter designs of the 20th century.

The 71/72 variation has to do with the ribbon. The 71 has a fabric ribbon, whereas the 72 has a cartridge that is carbon.. The 73 has the wider carriage and a cartridge, so the whole machine is wider.

The one exception for them is transit. Back in the day, IBM would have people come on site and set them up after freight shipping. These days, we just need to pack them more carefully.

That being said, they’ll last forever as long as you don’t drop them or smack them down too often or too hard. There are many moving parts that can fly out of alignment.

Here is the manual. It’ll go through some of the details more clearly than I could in the video. The video is just to get you roaring forward.

When you need a new ribbon, check our ribbons section. I am continually adding more to the fold. (Ask if you don’t see what you need). The best way is probably to reply to the tutorial email.

Enjoy your work of art!

Sincerely,
